Welcome to the Battle of Lake
Erie Website
Northfield, OH- Keith Kash, Jr., steered 3-1 Bono Bests three-wide at the three-quarters, and the five-year-old son of Pro Bono Best drew off in the stretch to win by 3 lengths in 1:52.2 over a sloppy track caused by a downpour just prior to the race. Bono Bests is owned by Herbert Burns III and Stephen Demeter, both of New York. The win was his 6th in his last 7 starts. Bono Bests has now won over $428,000 in his career.
The 1-5 favorite, Tigerama, took the early lead after a brief duel with Booze Cruzin and hit the quarter in a blistering 26 seconds. He got a breather to the half, which was reached in 55.2, and continued to lead at three-quarters in 1:23.4. But Bono Bests, who followed cover from Allamerican Inca rallied late to get the win over the favorite. Booze Cruzin finished third. Bono Bests paid $11.00.
Kash drove in Buffalo early on the card and then literally sped down I90 to get to Northfield in time for the Battle. That drive was his second fastest of the night.
TIGERAMA NAMED 7-5
FAVORITE IN BATTLE OF LAKE ERIE
DRAWS RAIL IN $100,000 NORTHFIELD PARK RACE
Canadian invader Tigerama, a winner of five straight races, has been named the 7-5 favorite in Saturday’s $100,000 Battle of Lake Erie, a by-invitation pace, at Northfield Park. It is the 23rd edition of the prestigious race at the half-mile harness track, located midway between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio.
Tigerama, a speedy pacer owned by Robert Hamather of Exeter, Ontario drew the inside post, which makes him a prohibitive favorite. On the other hand, Bono Bests, who figures to give Tigerama a run for his money, drew the outside post eight, making his task tougher as he was installed as the 9-2 third choice behind George Teague and Kovach Stables’ Western Ace, who carries a 4-1 morning line. Tigerama and Western Ace are both millionaires, while Bono Bests, owned by the New York partnership of Herbert Burns III and Stephen Demeter has been nearly unbeatable, winning five of six since being turned over to trainer Ross Croghan in February.
The Battle of Lake Erie is scheduled for about 11:00 PM Eastern and will be the 12th race on a 14-race card at Northfield Saturday. First race post is 7 PM. The race will be broadcast live on TVG network, channel 602 on DirecTV and channel 405 on Dish Network, and on HRTV, channel 404 on Dish Network.
